Grand Rapids Community College’s “Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award” goes to… Andrew Vanden Heuvel, adjunct in the Physical Sciences Department!

Andrew was recognized at the 7th annual Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase in a brief ceremony that took place at 1PM on Wednesday, March 20 in Sneden Hall.

Here are a few highlighted comments from his nomination form:

“Andrew has considerable knowledge and talent to develop courses that are polished, well organized, and deliver content that creates a top quality learning experience for students.”

“The online courses (AS 103 and PH 115) that Andrew has developed includes labs that can be completed at home and online.  In one lab, for example, he has created Camtasia videos of a ball rolling and falling. Students then apply the same quantitative analysis to the motion of the characters in Angry Birds to determine if the projectile motion in the game follows the laws of physics creating a sense of relevancy and motivation that connects the concepts that students are learning to real world situations.”

Jennifer Batten, Department Head in the Physical Science Department writes: “I know that these online lab courses have been among the first courses to fill in our department.  These courses allow students to complete an all online AA degree at GRCC.  Further, I recently spoke with a students with mobility issues who was very thankful for the laboratory class that could be completed at home.”

Congratulations to Andrew!!!
