Weekly Updates – November 23 and 30

The following updates are from the DLIT Department for the week ending November 23rd and 30th.


This area includes international, national, regional, state, and local activities.

  • Collegiate Live – DLIT was highlighted in the Collegiate: “The ultimate goal is to improve student success and enhance teaching and learning by leveraging technological resources,” Kunnen said. “DLIT is focused on equipping faculty and students with the knowledge, training, and information needed to effectively use the technology in delivering instruction and in coursework.”.  See:
  • MCCVLC Developmental Ed Online – Garry Brand attended a webinar this week delivered through the Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative on the topic of developmental education as online courses.His recap and notes are here along with the session recording: at the upcoming ITC eLearning 2012 Conference, held in Long Beach California from February 18 through 21, 2012, there will be a pre-conference workshop “Can Developmental Math be Taught Online?”.   A favorite of the conference is the Great Debate and this year’s topic, featuring Donna Gaudet, is “Developmental Students Can’t Succeed Online.”
  • Bb Executive Symposium – Ric Underhile and Gilda Gely attended a Blackboard Executive Symposium that ackBoard Higher Education Symposium on November 11th. This event was held in Washington DC at Blackboard headquarters.  Higher education administrators from around the country attended to discuss current trends in education.
  • Accreditation Conference Call – DLIT participated in a MCCVLC hosted a conference call to learn about Jackson Community College’s HLC site visit for distance learning.
  • Bb Administrator PDP – Social Networking and Profile discussions were held during the conference call as Bb looks to add social networking features into the system.
  • Grace Bible College Meeting – DLIT met with the Blackboard System Administrator at GBC to compare, share, and discuss best practices for system administration.

Department Action Projects & College Action Projects

This area includes accomplishments or milestones regarding Departmental and College Action Project(s).

  • Project 1 – Extend DL Program
    • Faculty Advisory Board – A faculty advisory board was created to provide faculty input to the distance learning and Blackboard. See:
    • OHCC Final Presentations & Certifications – 23 faculty have been certified to teach online at GRCC.  They were presented certificates, the Deans were notified, and the department heads as well.  They were also highlighted in GRCC Today.  See:
    • Courses in Development – There are  31 courses in development at GRCC for online/hybrid with recent Deans approvals for CO 205, 212, 233, 246, 275 and SP101.
  • Project 2 – Enhance Classroom and Instructional Technologies
    • Clickers Co-chair – Meegan Lillis is co-chairing the AGC issue paper on student response system standards.
  • Project 3 – Extend Blackboard Learn, Content, Community
    • Blackboard Team Meetings were held on November 23 and 30th.  Minutes are located here: and
    • Bb Collaborate Pilot – The approved POC form was submitted to Blackboard for the pilot that is set to begin in January.
    • Bb Analytics Field Trial – This was approved and the form submitted so that the field trial for Analytics for Learn can begin in January.
    • Faculty Absences Meeting – DLIT met with IT and Debbie Dewent and Misty McClure to discuss the potential of using Bb Connect as a distribution method for faculty absences via text message.
    • Surveys – The surveys were deployed for Students and Faculty.  This survey provides insight to the use of the Bb system.

Other Work within Your Department

  • DLIT Showcase Web Site – The TLT Showcase website was converted from webbuilder.
  • DLIT Faculty Advisory Board – A new website was created for the new advisory board.
  • CAP 5.1.2 Meeting on Starfish – Eric Kunnen attended a meeting for the Starfish CAP.
  • Attended at Curriculum Specialist Interview – Garry Brand and Eric Kunnen attended the interview for the new curriculum specialist position.
  • Faculty Learning Day – Garry Brand, Meegan Lillis, and Eric Kunnen met to discuss the DLIT presentation for faculty learning day.
