Weekly Updates – November 18

The following updates are from the DLIT Department for the week ending November 18th.


This area includes international, national, regional, state, and local activities.

  • Sloan-C Conference – Eric Kunnen attended the Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning.  A complete review of the conference including all session notes are located here:
  • PDP Webinar –  DLIT participated in a product development partnership with Blackboard on the topic: “Leveraging social networking tools for learning” – Specifically, the focus was on how social networking is used in courses at GRCC.
  • miBUG Blog Posts – The DLIT team attended the Michigan Blackboard Users Group conference at Davenport on Friday.  Several blog posts were generated and they are as follows:
  • Blackboard Friday not Black Friday – The Provost and Associate Dean of ISIS attended an event at Bb headquarters in Washington DC, Eric Kunnen attended the Sloan-C conference, and the DLIT team were at the miBUG event.

  • miBUG Meeting Recap –  Discussion board dilemma was a topic presented that focused on leveraging asynchronous communication in online courses.

  • miBUG Breakout Session – This session covered facilitating online learning through group collaboration.

  • miBUG Welcome – Davenport University hosted the meeting.  Sessions included Davenport faculty and also a product roadmap of Bb Collaborate.


Department Action Projects & College Action Projects

This area includes accomplishments or milestones regarding Departmental and College Action Project(s).

  • Project 1 – Extend DL Program
    • Access Update – Cindy Martin and John Cowles delivered an update to the Board around the Access End.  Mentioned in the report was the DL CAP 2.2.1.
  • Project 2 – Enhance Classroom and Instructional Technologies
    • N/a
  • Project 3 – Extend Blackboard Learn, Content, Community
    • Blackboard Meeting – The teams discussed several reported performance issues as well as the pilot of Bb Collaborate set to occur in Winter 2012.  Also the team would like to investigate an end user reporting tool to provide performance stats such as Coradiant Truesight.  See notes here.

Other Work within Your Department

This area includes accomplishments, milestones, or comments from within the department.

  • Donuts with DLIT – An event held with 16 faculty attending to have a dialogue about online learning, Blackboard, and instructional technologies.  A blog post is available that highlights the event with photos.
  • DLIT Updates to Blog – A blog post on creative uses for the leveraging Blackboard Voice Tools.
  • ISIS Project Meeting – The project meeting included some planning details of the January 2012 Learning Day.  The team expressed a desire to capture all sessions with Camtasia Relay.
  • Web Meeting – Eric Kunnen attended the Web Team where discussions where held on the following topics:
    • W Drive Cleanup
    • Discussion about additional web content faculty would like to upload and using Blackboard as a way for faculty to host files.
    • Discussion about the need for the college to understand that training resources are needed for web.
    • Discussion about the word “alias” among new to the web users.
    • Team Charter is being worked on.

EOL Faculty Reports

This area includes accomplishments, milestones, or comments from EOL faculty in the department.

  • Luann Keizer
    • OHCC course facilitation (6 hours)
      Reviewed online course rubric with CAD faculty
  • Tim Koets
    • 1.  On Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:30 I taught a ground session of the Blackboard Grade Center.
      2.  On Friday I facilitated the OHCC meeting from 1:00-2:30.
      3.  I spent about three hours meeting with faculty to train them on how to better use Blackboard.
