NBC Special Collections – Fear & Fright, Breast Cancer Awareness, and the Science of Football

Just in time for Halloween!  NBC Learn explains the chemistry of fear and fright, the chemistry of changing leaves, and provides highlights from breast cancer awareness month.

Visit the NBC Learn collections in Blackboard like Science of NFL Football and Chemistry Now… These collections have timely videos that you can easily add to your course!

  •    The “Science of NFL Football” videos will help you kick off your classes in science and math in an exciting way!  Hosted by NBC News’ Lester Holt, the series features demonstrations from players like former Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington and New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister. State of the art slow-motion camerawork shows every pass and kick in detail. From the Pythagorean Theorem to Newton’s Laws of Motion, your students will be amazed to see how much science there is in a game of football.
  •    Just why do leaves change their colors in the fall, from green to vibrant oranges, yellows and reds? This month, a new Chemistry Now collection explains the concept with original videos, archival clips and useful charts and graphs. In “Chemistry of Changing Leaves” students will learn all about the important role of chlorophyll in the color change.
  •    Why do people get scared around Halloween? (Hint: it involves the adrenaline molecule.) The video series explains how two hormones — andrenaline and cortisol — work to trigger a cascade of “fight or flight” fear responses when you’re confronted with something frightening.
  •    October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on NBC Learn you’ll find more than 50 clips from NBC News about new studies and treatments, and portraits of heroes like Betty Ford, who spoke openly about breast cancer, which now affects one in eight women in the United States.

To access the “Chemistry Now” and “Science of NFL Football” collections, along with special highlighted videos for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please login to GRCC’s Blackboard system and click “Browse NBC Archives”, and select “Special Collections”.
