Weekly Updates – September 23

The following updates are from the DLIT Department for the week ending September 23rd.

Community

This area includes international, national, regional, state, and local activities.

  • Blackboard BUG SQUAD – DLIT participated in conference call with a group of clients (392 are participating) that collaborate and come together to help each other with the latest release of Blackboard (9.1 SP6).  The call zeroed in on fixes coming in SP7 and SP8.  SP7 is coming up in the next few weeks.  SP8 84% of the top 100 bugs are fixed.  Of the top 40, 100% have been scoped for SP7 and SP8.  SP8 is set to be released in December. (SP8 key fixes: 1) Announcements email fail if one user has no email address.  2) Auto-submitted timed tests show needs grading. 3) Announcement notification emails are not sent reliably.  4) Gradebook columns created with a category of “no category” causes the needs grading feature to fail. 5) Forced submit tests have “in progress” status if a student fails to submit the test during the time allotted.
  • Bb Product Roadmap Webinar – Dan Anderson, Brent Spitler, Patti Trepkowski, Sarah Krajewski, Eric Kunnen, Meegan Lillis, and Garry Brand participated in a webinar hosted by Blackboard.  This webinar focused on many enhancements that are planned for 2011 and 2012.  Noteworthy are new features that provide standards/outcomes identification and reporting, an institutional assessment/survey tool, social learning spaces, and more.  The standards/outcomes feature can potentially be used in the college’s program assessment work.
  • SecondLife Webinar – Garry Brand participated in an MCCVLC SecondLife Webinar to talk about the VLC’s island and resources.

Department Action Projects

This area includes accomplishments or milestones regarding Departmental Action Project(s).

  • Project 1 – Extend DL Program
    • BOT Access End – Eric Kunnen submitted a set of Powerpoint slides to Cindy for the Access Update.
    • Deans CAP Update – Eric Kunnen presented an update at Deans Council on the DL CAP.
    • Wiki in GRCC.DL – The Bb organization site that has members of all certified DL faculty was updated by Garry Brand.  Highlights include a new folder in the “Resources” to include various conferences and outside organizations with resources.  He also started a “Professional Development Wiki” in that folder so faculty can add additional resources.
  • Project 2 – Enhance Classroom and Instructional Technologies

Other Work within Your Department

This area includes accomplishments, milestones, or comments from within the department.

  • Business Department Meeting Visit – Eric Kunnen and Meegan Lillis attended the Business Department meeting on Friday.  Highlighted the Distance Learning program, introduced Meegan Lillis, and provides information on how to get help with teaching, learning, technology and also presented the GRCC Digitial Initiative.
  • Adjunct Faculty Learning Day – Eric Kunnen, Jose Mora, Meegan Lillis, and EOL faculty Tim Koets, and Luann Keizer attended helped support the facilitation of the event last Saturday.  Meegan and Luann delivered a session on Blackboard Basics and Tim delivered the advanced track.

  • DLIT Web Updates – The following web pages were created and updated:

  • DLIT Budget Meeting – DLIT met to discuss what our expenses are, and layout the plan for the future.
  • DLIT EOL Faculty Meeting – Garry Brand, Meegan Lillis, and Eric Kunnen met (Tim Koets and Luann Keizer were absent) met to plan out the work for the semester.  Highlights included: Planning for OHCC for October Sessions, the upcoming ETOM conference GRCC is hosting, planning for Winter 2012, and working together to revise the tipsheets page for clarity and simplicity. Also, each member will work on a creating a blog article (“Faculty Voices”) and also  recuit a colleage to write one.
  • TWIDLIT =This Week In DLIT.  The department met and reviewed work for the week.  Highlights included specific tasks for each member of the team.
