Weekly Updates – May 6 & 13

The following updates are from the DLIT Department for the weeks ending May 6th and 13th.

Community

This area includes international, national, regional, state, and local activities.

  • Analytics Conference Call – DLIT held a conference call with the College of St. Scholastica.  This call provided the opportunity to share information and have a dialogue around academic analytics.  GRCC’s use of Starfish Early Alert, Project ASTRO, and bbStats was highlighted.
  • ODI Conference Call – DLIT participated in a conference call with Blackboard about the Open Database Initiative and how Project ASTRO and bbStats are benefiting from this initiative.
  • Bb Catalyst Award 2011 – Szymon Machajewski has recently been notified that he has been selected as a winner of the 2011 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Innovative Development!  Szymon’s contributions to the Blackboard community have been recognized as invaluable to the participants at large.  Szymon joins a select group of e-Learning professionals, system administrators and institution staff from the around the world whose participation has been recognized as a significant and exemplary contribution to our Blackboard Community.  He will be awarded this honor at at Blackboard’s, annual user conference, BbWorld 2011, that will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada – July 12-14.  This award ceremony will take place at the Blackboard Client Awards Luncheon.

College

This area includes College work related to teams and committees.

  • SENSE Report – Amy Koning, Laurie Chesley, Paula Sullivan, and Eric Kunnen met to discuss the SENSE report for a work assignment that was given to the group at a Deans Council meeting.

School of Arts & Sciences, Student Affairs, Workforce Development, and Instructional Support & Interdisciplinary Studies.

This area includes participation in the above schools as a representative of DLIT.

  • ISIS Project Management and ISIS Directors Meetings – 2 meetings were held to review projects among the ISIS directors and to discuss upcoming events.

College Action Projects

This area includes participation in any CAP work related to the college.

  • Early College Meeting for Online – A team of Daniel Clark; Eric J. Kunnen; Jeffrey Hartman; Michael Vargo; Sara Hill; and Amy Koning met to discuss creating online options for students in the Early College program.
  • Accelerated Online Passed for Deans – Deans Council voted and approved a motion to create more accelerated online course offerings with a target date of Winter 2012.

Department Action Projects

This area includes accomplishments or milestones regarding Departmental Action Project(s).

  • Project 1 – Extend DL Program
    • Bb Collaborate On Campus Meeting – Blackboard’s sales person visited GRCC’s campus to discuss the Bb Collaborate product suite along with leveraging synchronous technologies for training, tutoring, teaching, and web-based meetings.  A pilot opportunity was discussed.
    • Summer Cohort for OHCC – The summer cohort for the Online and Hybrid Certification Course began on May 6th with an orientation.  The following faculty are attending this 5 week training: Adisu  Kinfu,    Chronowski  John,    Coakley  Megan,    Dykema-VanderArk  Anthony,    Gendler  Daniel,    Hecksel  Tanya,    Kampmueller  Elaine,    Kelley  Roger,    Leneway  Monica,    Missad  Patricia,    Randall  Vernell,   Rumery  John,    Schott  Amethyst,    TerBurgh  Melissa,    York  Sheryl, and    Zapata  Carmela.
  • Project 2 – Enhance Classroom and Instructional Technologies
  • Project 3 – Extend Blackboard Learn, Content, Community
    • Blackboard Basics Session – A Bb Basics session was offered through the CTE.  7 faculty attended.
    • BIE Steering Committee Meeting – Participated in a conference call with the Blackboard Idea Exchange.  The committee reviewed upcoming work and discussed agenda topics for our face to face meeting at BbWorld.
    • AGC Update for Deans on AGC Minimum Use Standards for Bb – Eric Kunnen presented a report to Deans Council regarding the minimum use standards for Blackboard for the Winter 2011 semester.  Szymon Machajewski will be working to create a custom report tool.  This project has been prioritized by the DLIT Department Plan that was submitted for the 2011-12 calendar year and also by the Academic Administrative Technology Team.
    • “Lesson Challenge Winner: Online Components of Microbiology Labs” Webinar – Diane Sparks and Garry Brand attended a webinar on Softchalk.  Softchalk seems like a pretty powerful and intuitive tool. Diane really liked the idea of taking text-based coursepacks and making them more interactive with images, links, video, quick surveys, etc. We both liked the ability to prepare students before they come in for their labs.  Version 7 will include mobile templates.  We are planning to purchase 3 copies of this application through the GRCC Digital Initiative.
    • Kaltura Demo – DLIT participated in an on campus demo of Kaltura which provides a secure online system for video.  It has some powerful possibilities for campus media.  Media Technologies was also included in the meeting.
    • Bb Connect Demo – DLIT participated in a Bb Connect webinar that highlighted the unique features of the Blackboard integration which can provide text messaging and text-to-voice features for faculty to extend the communication toolset for teaching.
    • Blackboard BETA Support Program – IT has been selected to participate in a Product Development Partnership with Blackboard.  This will provide GRCC with the ability to stay current with support resources while also building relationships with contacts at Bb as well as with other universities.

Other Work within Your Department

This area includes accomplishments or milestones within the department.

  • ITC and Sloan-C Memberships – GRCC is now a member of the Instructional Technology Council and Sloan-C.  Resources provided by the organizations will be promoted by the DLIT EOL Faculty.
  • Interviews for ID – The interviews for the instructional designer position were held.
  • Interviews for Enterprise Analyst – Interviews for the Blackboard IT position were held.
  • Blackboard Course Copy Issues and Faculty Technical Support Model – This summer there were many reports of faculty that had problems with course copy with Blackboard.  The challenges have been primarily 2 fold.  1) Timely upgrades, patches, and workaround notifications for Blackboard.  The Enterprise Analyst position listed above will assist in this work in the future. and 2) The IT Help Desk is providing all problem-solving, troubleshooting, and error messages or issues reported by faculty, whereas DLIT EOL Faculty are providing support for training and how to questions.  These roles are still being established and clearly defined.
  • Distance Learning Online/Hybrid enrollments Increase – GRCC online enrollments are up 24+% from last summer and Online/Hybrid courses make up 22+% of all credits for the summer semester.  There are 3,801 enrollments and 2,486 unique students participating in Distance Learning.
