Weekly Updates – March 25 and April 1

The following updates for the the Distance Learning and Instructional Technologies Department for the weeks ending March 25th and April 1st.

DEPARTMENTAL – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • Faculty Support Tickets – In the past 2 weeks (26 for the week ending on the 25th and 52 for the week ending April 1st), DLIT responded to 78 requests for assistance regarding Blackboard and other instructional technologies. Time spent over the week is estimated at: 9 hours
  • Wikis, Blogs, and Journals Training Session – 7 participants were trained on how to use Blackboard tools for wikis, blogs, and journals.
  • “Turn Paper into Progress – Three Examples of How Xythos Has Streamlined Paper Processes on Campus” Webinar –  Attended a webinar on how to leverage the Xythos system that is similar to the Blackboard Content System.  The session was facilitated by Blackboard.  Our work to pilot the Xythos Drive relates to this webinar.
  • GRCC Digital Technology Initiative – Mark Vogel, Klaas Kwant, Bill Faber, Szymon Machajewski, Garry Brand, and Eric Kunnen met to discuss the 10,000 budget initiative.  Microphones seem to be the biggest obstacle for maximizing Relay videos.  Media Technologies is researching a built-in system using microphones in the instructor podium is being researched.  The Goal is : To get instructional technologies into the hands of faculty.   • DLIT Web Site – Modifications and updates were added to the new Drupal CMS.  This continues to be an important initiative that is also time consuming.  The updates can be viewed at: http://cms.grcc.edu/dlit

  • Bb Innovate Series Resources Added to CTE Website – The Blackboard Innovative Teaching Series offers live sessions or  recorded webinars, with the goal of providing faculty with valuable insight from the best practices and evolved online pedagogy.  The following BITS sessions, include: [Extending Bb DAP]

ACCESS – GRCC minimizes the barriers of time, place, cost, and educational preparation levels so that all members of the community have an opportunity to participate in college programs.

  • Living in a Mobile World: A Student Perspective on Being on a Mobile Campus – Blackboard provided a webinar on mobile technologies through Campus Technologies Magazine.   The webinar demonstrated how students are taking an active role in taking their schools mobile and how Blackboard Mobile Campus is enhancing their educational experience in and out of the classroom. Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University, and Loyola Marymount University students shared their experiences using mobile technology to learning. [Extending Bb DAP]
  • Community College Career and Training Grant Meeting – Judith Larsen; Julie Parks; Julie Parks; Kevin O’Halla; Lisa Dopke; Peggy Gorno; Kevin O’Halla; Lisa Dopke; Peggy Gorno; and Szymon Machajewski met to discuss an upcoming grant opportunity.  The priorities include:
    • Priority 1. Accelerate Progress for Low-Skilled and Other Workers
    • Priority 2. Improve Retention and Achievement Rates to Reduce Time to Completion
    • Priority 3. Build Programs That Meet Industry Needs, Including Developing Career Pathways
    • Priority 4. Strengthen Online and Technology-Enabled Learning
  • Course Review Team Formed – Eric Mullen, Luann Keizer, and Lisa Gloege will be serving on a team to review courses that have been approved to be developed through Deans Council. [DL CAP]
  • “Webinar: StudyMate Author Licensing Changes & Roadmap” – Participated on a webinar facilited by Resondus Inc.  This webinar is related to changes coming with our license for StudyMate.
  • New Blog posts:

COMMUNITY OUTREACH – GRCC enriches the community through educational and civic programming and partnerships.

  • Relay Interview – Garry Brand was interviewed and participated on a conference call with TechSmith and West Virginia University Health Sciences Center.  The session was facilitated by Campus Technology Magazine.
  • TLT SHOWCASE – Over 50 faculty and staff from Grand Rapids Community College, Kendall College of Art and Design, and Ferris State University attended the 5th Annual Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase that was held in the Center for Teaching Excellent on Thursday, March 31st.  The following faculty presented at this event:
