Distance Learning and Instructional Technologies Weekly Report

Week 1 – Ending January 7

DEPARTMENTAL – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • January 3 – Courses from 2009 were removed from the Blackboard system.
  • January 3 – The Blackboard 8 Server (bb8.grcc.ed) was expired from service.
  • January 6 – Faculty with EOL met to discuss work for upcoming semester.
  • Faculty Tickets: 112 faculty requests for assistance were responded to during this week.
  • Bb Tutorials – 3 videos were added to GRCC’s YouTube channel on course availability, adding items and how to access Bb Basics Online training.

ACCESS – GRCC minimizes the barriers of time, place, cost, and educational preparation levels so that all members of the community have an opportunity to participate in college programs.

  • January 5 – Faculty Learning Day
    • Wimba Voice Tools – Bill Faber, Carmela Zapata, and Stephen Barton presented on using Wimba Voice Tools in teaching and learning at the faculty learning day. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
    • Online Learning – Garry Brand and Steve Abid  presented on teaching online/hybrid classes at GRCC. [Linked to DL CAP]

STUDENT SUCCESS – GRCC students achieve their educational goals.

  • Starfish Early Alert – This system was configured so that all faculty, courses, and students can use the system. [Linked to DL CAP]

Week 2 – Ending January 14

DEPARTMENTAL – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • Faculty Tickets: 95 requests for assistance by faculty were responded to during this week.  The majority of questions related to course copy, file permission errors, and Bb basics.
  • Semester quick facts related to Blackboard:
    • Most active login period in Blackboard was Wednesday with over 4,393 logged in (unique) users within 3 hours.
    • In the last 7 days in .W11 courses:
      • unique users logged in: 744 faculty and 15,248 students
      • unique users that did not login: 149 faculty and 2,945 students
    • The top tools in Blackboard include:
      • Course Documents with 32,680 items
      • Grade Center columns with 25,290 items
      • Discussion board posts with 12,680 items
      • Assessments with 7,795 items
      • Announcements with 4,240 items
      • YouTube Mashups with 594 items
      • NBC Videos with 310 items
    • There were 20 recordings created with Camtasia Relay.
    • 306 online/hybrid students logged in and accessed the Bb Orientation for Online/Hybrid Courses on the 7th with 430 have accessed the site since the beginning of the week.
  • SSL certificates were updated on 5 Bb Learn application servers.
  • Blackboard DEV and TEST systems were created.
  • Blackboard Tutorials – A tutorial was added to GRCC’s YouTube channel on how to provide student feedback with assignments.
  • Blackboard Basics Session – 6 faculty participated in a Bb Basics session that was delivered through the Center for Teaching Excellence.

  • Research Begins DL with Frank – 1,000 students responded to the survey which makes up about 1/3. [Linked to DL CAP]

COMMUNITY OUTREACH – GRCC enriches the community through educational and civic programming and partnerships.

  • CMU Portal Discussion – DLIT and Central Michigan University held a conference call to discuss and share best practices in using the Blackboard Community System.
  • Ivy Tech / Seneca NSF 10-620 Grant – GRCC, Ivy Tech Community College, and Seneca College held a conference call to discuss possibilities for a joint grant on academic analytics for the Cyberlearning: Transforming Education grant.

Week 3 – Ending January 21

DEPARTMENTAL – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • January 20 – Blackboard Automation and Snapshot Meeting with IT
  • Faculty Tickets – 74 faculty requests for assistance were processed this week.
  • Bb Tutorials – 2 videos were added to GRCC’s YouTube channel on customizing Blackboard and how to manage Grade Center categories.

  • January 22nd Adjunct Learning Day
    • Luann Keizer and Eric Kunnen facilitated a session on Blackboard advanced topics, highlighting NBC Learn, Wimba Pronto, Blackboard Mashups, and Camtasia Relay.
    • Diane Sparks and Lisa Gloege facilitated a Blackboard Basics session.

  • January 19 – ETOM Board Meeting
  • January 21 – EDUCAUSE Advisory Council Meeting on Teaching and Learning

Week 4 – Ending January 28

DEPARTMENTAL – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • January 25 – Eric Kunnen participated in a Summer Enrollment Meeting to discuss marketing and growth of online courses.
  • January 26 – Eric Kunnen was invited to join the Faculty Professional Development CAP team and met with the team to review learning day and look into the future of needs.
  • January 28 – An email was sent to all faculty highlighting the upcoming miBUG Event at GVSU and the BbWorld’11 Conference.
  • Faculty Tickets – DLIT responded to 93 requests for assistance with Blackboard.
  • Bb Tutorials – A tutorial was added to the GRCC YouTube site on how to manage Blackboard “Smart Views”.

  • Lastest Distance Learning Reports and Data for Winter
    • There are 54,194 total GRCC enrollments (these exclude 0-credit labs and clinicals; neither could be offered online) and 4,309 enrollments in online/hybrid courses.  This results in 7.8% of courses being offered at GRCC.
    • There were 206 online/hybrid sections offered, with 2,236 lecture sections total, resulting in 9.2% of courses being offered online/hybrid this Winter semester.
    • For W11 Online/Hybrid courses at GRCC: 4,309 (3560 in W10) enrollments / unique headcounts 2,969 (2,553 in W10).

  • January 27 – John Cowles provided an update on the Student Success CAP.  Referenced in this update was the use of Starfish Early Alert for the full campus. (48 faculty raised flags, 116 manual flags were raised, with a total of 804 including last login, 55% of the flags have been cleared.)

  • January 28 – MCCVLC Advisory Meeting
  • January 28 – Conference call with Ric Kienbaum, Distance Learning Lab Coordinator of Van Buren Intermediate School District.  Shared ideas for working together to advance Distance Learning opportunities for K12 students.
  • miBUG Hosting – GRCC is now the Website host for the Michigan Blackboard Users Group at: http://www.mibug.org
