Weekly Updates – December 8

Distance Learning and Instructional Technologies Weekly Report

The following updates are for the week ending December 8th, 2010:

Departmental – This category includes general tasks, ongoing maintenance, issue tracking, faculty support, and other duties related to the department’s operations.

  • Faculty Support Tickets – This week, DLIT responded to over 114 faculty requests for assistance with Blackboard and instructional technologies.  This work continues to occupy the top spot in both priority and time spent for the department and as the semester comes to a close many questions are common around grading and assessments.
  • Bb Student Survey and Faculty Survey Deployed – The semester Bb survey was deployed.  Feedback will be shared in a future report.
  • Bb Fixes – Custom Fixes for Bb tested and set to production install on Monday. – Images in Assessments, and Announcements Hidden Incorrectly (this one still is broken).
  • W11 courses created – Courses for Winter semester were created on Blackbaord.
  • Bb Assessment Session – DLIT facilitated a session on assessments in Blackboard through the CTE.

Access – GRCC minimizes the barriers of time, place, cost, and educational preparation levels so that all members of the community have an opportunity to participate in college programs.

  • DL CAP update – Eric Kunnen worked on authoring a presentation for AGC.
  • Webinar for Accreditation – Eric Kunnen participated in a webinar on accreditation for online programs. “Accreditation Standards for Online Programs” was presented by Jennifer Lerner (, Associate Vice President, e-Learning, Northern Virginia Community College.
  • Bb Collaborate Advisory Board Webinar – Eric Kunnen participated in the advisory board meeting for the new combined Wimba/Elluminate group.  Synchronous tools are becoming more important for online learning.
  • Bb Executive Meeting – Eric Kunnen, Ric Underhile, Patti Trepkowski, Gilda Gely, Kevin O’Halla, Garry Brand, Peggy Gorno, and Szymon Machajewski partipated in an on campus meeting with Blackboard Inc. executives.  Discussions and dialogue were around Bb and GRCC’s strategic initiatives and goals for growing distance learning and expanding the use of Blackbaord.
  • Certified OHCC Faculty – In an effort to enhance and extend flexible learning options that help meet student’s needs, the following 15 faculty have recently received Online & Hybrid Instructor Certification!

Academic Alignment – GRCC collaborates closely with other educational providers to provide a seamless transition across all educational sectors.

Student Success – GRCC students achieve their educational goals.

  • Online Student Research Project – Frank Conner shared a draft of Research of Online Student Readiness.
  • Starfish Block Upgrade and Testing – Szymon Machajewski installed and began testing on the new Building Block for Starfish Early Alert in preparation for campus wide deployment in the Winter semester.

Workforce Development – GRCC students are prepared to secure employment in all sectors of the economy.

The GRCC Experience – GRCC provides students with co-curricular experiences that help them develop their citizenship skills.

Community Outreach – GRCC enriches the community through educational and civic programming and partnerships.

  • University of Pittsburg and Ivy Tech Community College – UOP and Ivy Tech were contacted to share ideas and collect feedback for the roles and responsibilites of an Instructional Designer Position.
  • miBUG Web site Hosting – GRCC will be hosting the Michigan Blackboard Users Group Web site.
  • BIE Steering Committee Meeting – Eric Kunnen attended the steering committee meeting with the following highlights on the agenda:

o   Product Roadmap

o   Responsiveness and Maintenance Strategy

o   Improving User Experience

o   Partnerships and Adoption

o   Blackboard Openness

o   Supporting Clients for Success & Excellence

o   Update on Blackboard Collaborate

o   Expanding the Blackboard Community
