Weekly Updates – September 10

The following updates are from the week ending September 10th:

  • Faculty Support Tickets – Since Tuesday of this week, DLIT responded to more than 90 faculty requests for assistance with Blackboard.  This continues to consume the majority of time in our office.  The response varies from 5 minutes to more than an hour to resolve or to assist faculty.  The following Wordle tag cloud highlights the keywords for the support faculty were looking for: [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Sustainability Team Presentation – Eric Kunnen presented at the Sustainability Team Meeting on the latest features in Blackboard 9.1 that relate to potential for various sustainability initiative across the campus.   The key themes included: e-content (online docs, assignment collection, new journal, wiki, blog, nbc), online course growth, mobility, and collaboration (Wimba Pronto servers run on purchased wind credits).  Also the recommendation by AGC for minimum Blackboard use was also mentioned. Additional new projects were also highlighted.  This included: scan to Bb from a copier, faculty absences via text message, parking ramp open status Building Block and iPhone app, iPhone app bus routes and realtime updates, ebooks initiatives through McGrawHill/Follet/Barnes and Noble (Nook/Cafe’ Scribe), etc. that have integration with Blackboard.
  • Wimba Pronto Update Issue – An issue was reported to Wimba Inc. regarding the synchronization of students, faculty, and staff not seeing an updated list of courses/organizations in their Pronto client.   • Blackboard Support Tickets – DLIT updated and submitted additional support tickets with Bb support regarding new issues found in Blackboard 9.1 that have been reported by faculty. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Starfish Early Alert – After resolving an issue with Starfish Early Alert automatic flags, the attendance flag was turned on for online courses.  This flag is raised if a student hasn’t logged into their course within 7 days.  190 flags were raised and students were emailed if they haven’t logged into to their online course in the past 7 days.   • Bb Tutorials – Additional tutorials were created based on common questions that DLIT has been receiving around how to use Blackboard. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Student Tipsheets for Blackboard – Students workers are assisting with developing Bb support documents for students.  These haven’t yet been updated. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • ISIS Directors Meeting – More ESP support will soon be available to DLIT through a sharing of an ESP position.  This is very exciting news as the workload within the CTE and DLIT areas is continuing to increase. [Linked to DL CAP]
  • Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 2 – Szymon Machajewski is working on setting up a test server for Service Pack 2 of Blackboard version 9.1.  This service pack will resolve many issues that have been reported recently by faculty. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
