Weekly Updates – August 27

The following updates are from the DLIT Department for the week ending August 27th.

  • Direct Faculty Support – As the semester approaches and with the new release of Blackboard 9, we have responded to over 130 email, dropin, and phone questions related to Blackboard.  Monday was extremely busy and we even had faculty sitting on the floor in 125M waiting to ask a question about Blackboard.  On Friday, the 27th we will also have a drop-in time for faculty to come in to prepare for Fall. • OHCC Final Presentations – Final presentations were held for the OHCC course.  These sessions were recorded with Relay, however, there was a problem with the audio in room 351M, therefore, no audio was recorded and that was disappointing.  Faculty presentations are always the pinnacle of the OHCC training as they are able to demonstrate and show and learn from other faculty how their template meets the GRCC Distance Learning Standards.  Final grading is still being processed with certificates to be mailed out soon. • Pronto Issue Identified – Eric Kunnen submitted a ticket with Wimba support to troubleshoot a problem with Fall courses not properly showing up in the Pronto client.  This ticket is being worked on by Wimba Inc, but is not yet fully resolved. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • SafeAssign Block Fix for FERPA – Szymon Machajewski installed a new Building Block for SafeAssign which is the plagiarism detection tool that is built into Blackboard. This update was required because of a recently-discovered FERPA violation specific to SafeAssign version 2.4 and 1.4. This is both a privacy issue, where students are seeing other student grade information, as well as a usability issue where students are confused by seeing comments unrelated to his/her graded assignment. • Course Files (Item Copy) vs Course Copy Debugging Issue – Garry Brand and Eric Kunnen worked to identify and troubleshoot an issue that some faculty were reporting when using the Item Copy feature in Bb.  A ticket was submitted with Blackboard Inc. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Troubleshoot Nursing and Bb Orientation Guest Access – An issue was found with guest access for organization sites such as the Nursing, Library, and the Bb Orientation course.  This was preventing students from accessing these sites for information.  After troubleshooting, a workaround was identified and put in place. • Bb Basics Session – There were more than 20 faculty that registered for the Blackboard 9 Basics session. This session was held in 109 Cook and was less than ideal.  There were a few problems with the laptops from the laptop cart during the session.  We are looking forward to the improvements to 351M with dedicated workstations. • DLIT Phone Issue – An issue was identified for faculty that called the x3205 (Distance Learning Office front desk) phone number for Bb support and we don’t have anyone to answer the phone.  For now, we have changed the message to request that they email for support questions related to Bb and for emergency situations to call 3688. • FAQ Updates – Spent time adding to the FAQs for Bb 9 based on the calls and support tickets coming in. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • New Faculty Institute – Bill Faber and Eric Kunnen presented on Bb9 at the NFI. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]

  • Wimba Inc. Voice Conference Call – A conference call was held with Wimba Inc. to discuss service plans for assisting with training and promotion of Wimba Pronto on campus.  [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Xythos Drive Pilot – Work is proceeding forward on the Xythos Drive pilot that will empower faculty and staff to better leverage the Bb Content System.  This is a very exciting initiative that we are very happy to finally get started with. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
