Weekly Updates – August 13

The following updates are from the DLIT department for the week ending August 13th:

  • DLIT Faculty Drop In – The DLIT office will be open for faculty drop in from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on August 13th to support faculty with the upgrade to Blackboard 9 or other technology questions. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Deans Meeting – The Blackboard 9 Upgrade was highlighted during Deans Council.  Eric Kunnen presented with Darcy Swope on the faculty communications and browser update recommendations as well as plans to push out the Firefox 3.6 browser to all faculty.  In addition, all classroom and classroom computers have been updated to the latest release of Firefox.   • Blackboard 9 Faculty FAQ – All faculty will be emailed on Friday with a list of frequently asked questions that have come in around the upgrade. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Blackboard 9 Postcard – Worked with Printing Services to finalize the Bb 9 postcard design.  Additional graphic files were created and shared to assist in the final design.  A postcard will be snail mailed to faculty home addresses ideally yet this week.   • Blackboard 8 Content Update Target Email – Faculty and staff that have changed, added, or modified content or taught in S10 in Blackboard 8 will be contacted via email.  The email will contain instructions on how to export and import content into Blackboard 9.   • Blackboard 8 Organization User Target Email – Faculty and staff that have changed, added, or modified content in organization sites in Blackboard 8 have been contacted via email.  The email provided instructions on how to export and import content into Blackboard 9.   • Blackboard 9 Pilot Email – Faculty teaching with the Blackboard 9 pilot server have been contacted about the server shutdown date of August 28th.  Content from this pilot server will be archived for use in the production Bb 9 system for Fall. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • 351M Computer Image Requests – Eric Kunnen compiled and sent a request to IT to ensure that the latest versions of Wimba Pronto and Camtasia Relay will be available (in addition to the standard office image) when the new computers are installed for the faculty training lab.   • Wimba Pronto Update Request – Eric Kunnen sent an email to IT to request that Wimba Pronto 3.1.0 be included in computer labs as this version provides whiteboard features and other enhancements. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • DL Student Letter – Worked with Misty McClure to prepare and send a Student Welcome & Orientation Letter for Online Students that will be sent out to all online students. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • DL Faculty Email – Prepared an instructor email for all online/hybrid instructors to include information about the semester startup, changes with Bb 9, new features in Bb 9, and also how to begin using the Starfish Early Alert system which will be used to track attendance and grades for all online courses.   • Blackboard 9 Mobile Learn Server – Szymon Machajewski and Peggy Gorno assisted in helping to establish a new server for the new Blackboard Mobile Learn features that are included with Bb 9.  This new server will allow mobile access to Blackboard by iPads, iPhones, Blackberrys, and Android mobile devices.   • ETOM Board Meeting – Eric Kunnen participated in the ETOM Board meeting.  Topics discussed included a review of the Higgins Lake Retreat, the Online Certification Course, and the upcoming Fall Conference to be held at Mott Community College.
  • Student Communication Team Meeting – Eric Kunnen and Szymon Machajewski participated in a student communication team meeting.  The purpose of this meeting is to develop a comprehensive technology solution to reach and inform students of important campus announcements, information, events and opportunities via text message/Facebook/email or other means. Szymon shared a proposal for creating a system leveraging the use of Blackboard to provide students with the ability to easily access and sign up for channels of communication.
  • RAVE Wireless Building Block – The Building Block that enables students to subscribe by email or SMS Text Message was successfully tested with Blackboard 9.  This testing was conducted in cooperation with the team at Rave Wireless. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • DL Student Orientation Course Load – All online and hybrid students have been automatically enrolled in the Blackboard Orientation Course on Blackboard. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Blackboard 9 Activity Accumulator Fix – Szymon Machajewski fixed the activity accumulator on Blackboard 9 so that advanced reports can be obtained using Project ASTRO. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • YouTube Closed Captioning – Spent time adding a closed captioning script to the Online Readiness video for a deaf student for Sarah Rose. [Linked to DL CAP]
  • Blackboard 9 Course Copy Issue – An issue was identified with course copy earlier in the week. This issue was preventing the gradebook from successfully copying. Working with Blackboard support, Szymon Machajewski applied a script to resolve the problem. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Blackboard Database Issue – The Blackboard database has overly high activity and backups are not saving correctly.  Emergency maintenance was performed to the Bb pilot system from 12:30 to 1:30 on Monday. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • OHCC Certification Course – The Online & Hybrid Certification Course continues.  This week, the focus is on preparing students for online learning and providing effective online instruction. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Starfish Configuration – Szymon Machajewski setup configuration for the Starfish Early Alert system to include all AFP and Online Courses. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Student Senate Election on Bb – Eric Kunnen exchanged email with Kettering University and Longwood University to inquire how these institutions have successfully used Blackboard for student elections.  A mock election will be run in the Fall semester to test the system.  The current plan is to use an Organization site along with the Survey tool in Bb.   • OHCC Certification Report – A report was researched, compiled, and shared to match participation of 1st and 2nd year faculty with OHCC certification. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP and DL CAP]
  • Blackboard 9 Direct Faculy Support – Garry Brand and Eric Kunnen responded to 52 faculty email requests about the Blackboard upgrade since Monday, August 9th. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • DLIT Web Page – A request has been sent to IT to move over the /distance and /dlit websites into the new Web CMS.
  • Summer Technology Institute Meeting – Garry Brand, Melanie Forbes, Eric Kunnen, and Bill Faber met to discuss the outline and prepare for the 3 day summer technology institute.
  • Blackboard 9 Course Tools Fix – Spent time troubleshooting an issue with course tools disappearing in some courses during course copy.  Szymon Machajewski wrote and implemented a custom solution to address the problem. [Linked to Extending Bb Learn Platform DAP]
  • Blackboard 8 Downtime Scheduled – On Friday, August 13 from 10PM to midnight, the Blackboard 8 production server will be shutdown for system maintenance.  This downtime is part of the Blackboard 9 upgrade work.
